“Cockscomb” is used as the flower looks like the crown on a rooster’s (cock) head.
鸡 Jī, which means rooster, is an auspicious animal. The Chinese believe that the rooster can ward off evil spirits as it crows at the break of dawn.
鸡Jī, rhymes with the word luck, 吉 Jí, in Chinese.
Thus, making it a traditional favourite for the Chinese New Year season to bring in luck to the family.
