This species of fig tree is native to the Indian subcontinent and is distinguished by its heart-shaped leaves with an extended tip. According to Buddhist tradition, Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism, attained enlightenment while meditating under a Ficus religiosa tree, hence it is also called the Bodhi Tree or "Tree of Enlightenment."
